How to Perform a Total Body Cleanse

Why am I toxic?

Many people find it hard to believe that the body could be full of toxic agents that slow the body down. But keep in mind that the human organism is designed to process a certain omnivorous diet, consumed in a certain way. When this balance is thrown off with foreign and unnatural chemicals like preservatives or high levels of saturated fats, the natural systems that keep the body clean and devoid of toxins can get overloaded and slowed down. When this happens, the body focuses most of its energy to keeping this detox process going. It’s always happening. You are always being cleansed by your liver, kidneys, and other digestive organs in the system. But these can only work so fast.

Just like you can’t expect your muscles to lift more than you’ve trained them to do, it’s foolish to expect your digestive organs to process toxins at a faster, more intense rate than they are designed to do. It doesn’t mean you have to baby yourself and avoid all the foods you like, it just means you have take time now and then to recuperate and regenerate the digestive process.

What's Making me Toxic?

There are certain foods and beverages that contain high amounts of unnecessary and unusable chemical agents.  These culprits include meat and dairy, elements of our diet that developed more recently than our primitive vegetarian nature and contain high amounts of fats and heavy, hard to break down proteins that can slow the liver.  Also wheat products high in gluten and carbohydrates tend to be sticky and difficult to digest.  Sugars and Salts are additives that the body is designed to receive in very small amounts from natural sources like fruits and vegetables.  However modern industry places richly compact sources of refined sugar in things like high-fructose corn syrup that introduce highly excessive amounts of the sweet stuff into the blood stream, forcing the liver and pancreas to run along behind to keep cleaning up after.  This over-saturation of condensed sugars and syrups, as found in soft drinks and the like, are a major cause of diabetes, especially in children.  

It shouldn’t be a shock that alcohol and cigarette smoke are highly toxic agents that put enormous strains on the body.  A smoker’s cough is the result of tar-like substances building up in the lungs from the polluted air being inhaled so often.  This gets into the blood stream as well.  A hangover is literally your body trying to recover from being blasted with an overdose of poison.  The liver can only process so much.  When you drink too much, you’ve outpaced your liver’s ability to filter the toxin from your bloodstream, resulting in being drunk.  The weakness, fatigue, and nausea associated with a hangover is the result of your body sapping all its energy to heal the digestive tract and bloodstream of the damage done the night before.  Food toxins have a similar effect but it’s much less sudden and severe, making it harder to notice.  That’s why you don’t realize you’re slowing down and losing energy because it happens so slowly, as opposed to one binge night of drinking.  This is where the total body cleanse can come in to repair.

The Cleanse

The total body cleanse consists of eliminating your consumption of these toxic agents so that your body can catch up. Fill your system with natural fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens. Try to eat things as raw as possible, as cooking tends to introduce fats and oils and burns away some of the naturally fibrous nutrients in the plants. Citrus and natural sugars sustain the body while it processes out all the heavy junk.

Plenty of rest during the period of your detox cleanse will help you achieve a maximized total body cleanse, as your body has more energy to devote to the cause. Protein shakes can offset the nutritional dip during this period as well, helping you to stay strong and nourished while the toxins are working their way out.

Try to stay focused on the goal. Like any kind of intervention, your body will be a bit shocked at first and you’ll have intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Many people are literally addicted to fats and toxins because it’s such a staple of their diet. This could be you. So be patient with yourself but be firm and strong. Know that on the other side of this total body cleanse period lies a new, refreshed, reborn You that will love and thank you for what you’ve accomplished.
